Huron, SD – November 2, 2011 USDA Rural Development State Director Elsie M. Meeks, along with Mills Construction, Huron city officials, the property management team and tenants visited Huron Associates-Huron Apartments today to celebrate the beginning stages of rehabilitation on the multi-family housing complex.
“This project will create short term jobs with local contractors,” stated Meeks. She continued, “This is a great example of the federal government supporting local efforts. The apartments are a great asset to the community. Congratulations to all who have provided leadership on this effort!”
Huron Apartments consists of five buildings and is a 59-unit family designated complex. The first building on this project was built in October 1977 and the other buildings were later added the following year. The project has experienced vacancy concerns in recent years. With renovation and upgrades being made, they hope to increase the occupancy rate.
USDA Rural Development provided Multi-Family Housing loan funds in the amount of $496,000 and Multi Family Housing Revitalization funding in the amount of $1,250,439 for the repair/rehab of this project. Rehab includes new kitchens and extensive upgrades to all 59 units, which includes 16-one bedroom, and 43-two bedroom to better serve the needs of families in the area, along with plumbing, electrical, flooring, doors, appliances, and handicap accessibility. The first phase of work includes foundation and drainage upgrades.
“It is very satisfying to see these things really happening here. And how great it is for our residents and property in this location to have all these updates, as we are getting renewed bottom to top!!,” said Mary Jo Minor, Huron Associates Co- General Partner.
USDA Rural Development has eight offices in the state that assist rural communities. Office locations include a state office in Huron, along with area offices in Aberdeen, Mitchell, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Watertown, and Yankton.
