Not only has the Mills family made an impact in the housing and construction industry, but also in the community of Brookings and the region. Harvey was recognized in the SDSU “Alumnus” in 1967 as the “Mayor of Indian Hills”-a development of parks, green space and bike paths. Along with being active in and receiving awards from Associated General Contractors and being involved with AGC National Education Committee. Daughter Mary Jo Minor, current president of Mills Property Management, and grand daughter Jessica Hardt, both have numerous community service groups they serve on.
Mills Construction continues to be a leader in custom and commercial building after being sold to a non-family member friend. The land holding company is owned by Harvey’s daughters, Sally Odenbach and Mary Jo Minor. Mills Property Management is owned by Mary Jo with a minority shareholder, Harvey’s first cousin, Wendy Peterson, and Harvey’s son John, a successful land developer.
Mills Property Management out grew its 1800 square foot offices and moved to 6,000 square foot custom built facility in 2008. From its five employees in 1992 to 34 full time employees today, that manage over 1500 residential units, commercial property and business endeavors. The Award sponsor, First Bank and Trust of Brookings had Jon Knuths present the Mills family of Mills Property Management with the 2008 Prairie Family Business of the Year Award at the Prairie Family Business Association state conference in Chamberlain on April 24, 2008.
